I think noise cancelling would be quite tricky because audible knock would be part of the signal that you're trying to cancel.

Yes, would certainly be nice to have it come up in NIStune. Need more people on our side willing and able to do some code dissasembly....

I can tell you why the GTRS has more top end - it runs a 71mm comp wheel instead of the 60mm wheel found on the T28.

Yep. I've got that very unit. Somewhere. Downsides were that the little cheap headphones don't keep external noise out and using the "clip the mic to the engine" technique results in hearing a lot of mechanical noise. Be easy to upgrade though - by insulating the mic from the engine (as I ...

I suspect the ported cover may make a bit of difference but it's unlikely your surge ports will cos there's no way that compressor will approach surge on a SR20.

10 points for being willing to experiment though. More power to you Chris!

Another thing I was considering is using the "in ear" type "ear phones". Some of these seal into your ears really well - blocking out all external noise. Like these: http://store.shure.com/store/shure/en_US/DisplayProductDetailsPage/productID.105432000 The only downside is that y...

I just use a 9V battery. Amp module is in one side and battery in the other. So I have no vehicle connections at all - just run the mic under the bonnet and go. Keeps it nice and portable because as you have probably found out - once you know how to tune everybody wants you to do their car!!

I'll go the headphones every time. Any system will have its effectiveness compromised if you can't keep vehicle noise out. I tune mainly on a dyno so ambient noise is bad. By using a decent set of headphones you can keep a lot of unwanted noise out. Particularly with race cars/buggies. Road cars tha...

Another solution for the amplifier part is this little project from Jaycar. They are an Australian company but I'm sure there would be even better stuff available overseas. They do a little amp module based on the LM386 audio amp IC. The whole module is tiny (I built this into my headphones) and cos...

He should be able to download it using whatever he likes. But NIStune tends to be best. He could download the single use trial version if NIStune to do it - then he just needs a consult cable. Some ECU's are easier than others when it comes to downloading. Some work perfectly first time. Others can ...

Yes, the GRID list is a good one for JDM stuff. Usually ECU's from the same family can have base images swapped. But try to avoid swapping manual/auto images. The S13 KA24DE is a classic. If you put a manual image in an auto ECU (could be other way around - can't remember) they will RPM limit at abo...

Yeah, it's always good if people can give you the proper part number of their ECU. For some reason many USDM ECU's don't have the Nissan part number on them, so it can often be a matter of plugging into the Consult port with Datascan or something and letting the ECU tell you what it is. Many USDM EC...

If it was S13 I'd say yes but S14's I believe are different. Matt has recently got the S14 KA24 ECU's working though. I see there are already some 70Fxx series ROMs in the ROM pack so I reckon if you could extract the ROM from the ECU then he'd be able to get you going. I think they take a Type 4 bo...

I think you're out of luck at present. I don't have any S14 KA ECU's - I think Matt has one though. You'll have to wait until he returns on the 20th.

The problem we have is that we never got S13/S14 KA24's here in Oz so it's very difficult to source ECU's.

Excellent! :) I love to see people cobble together working systems from found objects. You're a man after my own heart! I haven't been using a knock sensor at all - I use an electret mic insert which isn't touching the block. I tune a lot of different cars so i need something that I can quickly and ...

Hey Chris, I've got the mic mounted in an ally tube (about 25mm dia tube x 150mm long) and then the tube is wrapped in sound absorbent material and then heat shrunk. The mic is mounted about 50mm back from the open end of the ally tube. This makes it quite directional. I then place the mic under the...
