I hate being the new guy but.. gotta start somewhere

If it isnt a problem or a suggestion it probably goes here.

I hate being the new guy but.. gotta start somewhere

Post by SavageS13 »

Hey guys, My name is Evan. Live up here in the wonderful state of massachusetts  lol

I'm a firm believer in doing things myself. Especially when it comes to my vehicles. So when i decided to KA-T and everyone asked "whos going to tune it for you?" naturally i said "Me of course." 8)

So! after ordering boards for myself, my brother and a fellow s-chassis enthusiast, i dove into setting up my s13 coupe with an s14 KA for a top mount turbonetics t3/t4 60 trim, sti yellow tops and and s14 maf pull through. Using an s13 ecu, harness, and dizzy. Havent touched the internals of the block yet so i left the turbosmart 38mm wastegate at its preset 7lbs.

Things were going great, had idle AFR floating around 14.5-15, and it always accessed the last two load columns on boost. Smoothed out the fuel map till i was happy with AFR across the board. Transitioned nicely from stoich to 12 on boost. also adjusted on boost timing a bit and smoothed it out to be well under knock threshold as a safety till i really get the hang of it.

Always had a problem with IACV being stuck open so i regulated idle air flow with a pair of vice grips on the rubber tube by the throttle body connected to cold pipe  worked great!. Now that i've replaced the iacv and air regulator and also cleaned up the throttle body, the iacv works.. kinda.

The issue im having is if i rev the engine at idle or while shifting, when the revs drop, it catches itself at 2k and slowly settles back down to idle. Honesty, im rather unfamiliar with how the ecu regulates the idle like that so im in search of help there.

A seperate issue that id like to clarify with myself is i just swapped to a z32 maf set up for blow through on the cold pipe. wanted to run blow through because i also intalled a synapse synchronic BOV replacing the POS knock off hks SSQV. didnt want to recirc the air so blow through it was.. much cleaner looking as well.

With the Z32 installed after adjusting K constant, i did a few careful runs to see how it would react to it. Noticed it would no longer access last to load columns. They were at values of 79 and 86. I then had the table trail the cells to see exactly where it was going. It wasnt accessing past about 65. Logic tells me i have to adjust the fuel load scaler to adjust for the new, bigger z32 maf?

Any help, input, criticism is all greatly appreciated.

Love the software and cant wait to REALLY get the hang of it.

Thanks guys!
-Evan

Well, After getting out of work and being able to get the car back out on the road i had some fun.

adjusted the IACV. adjusted maxTP, fuel nd ign load scales and readjusted injector latency and K. Doesnt hang in the RPM nearly as bad as it did before and after playing with the timing map it pulls ALOT harder.

When thing i did notice that raised a question in my head... if i step into the gas hard i can watch the afr dip rich like its supposed to under load and stay rich. But if i ease into the gas while still applying load, and by that i mean im not gaining rpm on low load, it leans out to 15.5 to 16 then dips back down to 12-12.5. I noticed that on my last run heading home. I can only assume stabbing the throttle makes it jump to the last two load columns while easing into it registers across the whole map. So i'll have to play with the cells in the middle of the map to make it a smoother transition onto boost it seems?

Kind of just rambling here.. i feel like typing everything out helps figure out whats really going on. and of course allows other to follow throught processes and provide input :D

Thanks!

Hi Evan

Idle getting stuck - check to see what the timing is when it does this. Should be about 15 degrees BDTC when engine is warm. Otherwise you may have the throttle getting stuck or something like that letting a bit more air through than you were expecting when its trying to close

Installing the Z32 MAF can change the load readings on the map. If you havent adjusted the scalers this would be the issue. However are you installing larger injectors? because that will subsequently increase the load readings also if you do this

If you accelerate hard it will access the last columns (Accelerate increase table) but slowly you could be accessing different cells perhaps which lean out. When it dips back is it on the same cells? Keep the maps smooth also

Matt,

Managed to get it running quite well. Smoothed out the tables and adjusted the scalers. The injectors are subaru yellows (550ish?) Its holding good afr's on boost (10lbs now), cruising afr's are dead nuts around 14.7 and idle is doing great after i swapped out the throttle body for a fresh one. Only thing that seems really left to do is play with the timing across the whole map and smooth it out a bit along with the acceleration increase table. Just havent had the time to go do some pulls.

Thing sounds great with the Synapse bov. I'll have to get a copy of the bin up after im done playing with it for everyone to review and point me in the right direction if ive missed something magical.

Thanks again for the great product and support!

Great to hear from people doing DIY tuning - that's after all what NIStune was developed for.

Make sure you rig up some sort of knock monitoring when playing with IGN maps. Even if it's just a piece of hose connected to some ear muffs.
