How much timing to remove initially for high boost Z32?

Post by RobH »

Hi guys. What would be a sensible amount of timing to remove as a safe starting point for a Z32 running 1.4bar with all supporting mods? How many degrees and starting at which load column in the timing map? My guess was 5 degrees from the mid load column onwards, I have more trouble with knock in mid range than at high load. Is it worth 'smoothing' the timing map around the retarded area, bearing in mind it's only a temporary change and wil need fine tuning on the dyno...?

Yeah, 5 degrees across the whole high load area would be a reasonable way to start with some degree of safety. Although before any tuning takes place you shouldn't really be using that part of the map anyway.

Thanks Pete. Not sure how much I'd taken out initially, may only have been a couple of degrees, retarded the whole upper right hand corner of the map by at least 5 degrees now, and it seems to have done the trick. Driving sideways now with very little provocation ;)
Dyno time i think...

For safety take -1º degree for +1 pound of boost increase

how do you go about running 55psi in a 1.8L running E85 in that case making 1200HP at 24deg BTDC?

start at 79deg BTDC?

big LIKE :)

As soon as car starts drive it with minimum load under boos to dyno and do it properly , don't go sideways and in boost before that is only safe way ...

LOL... no chance.
This little blue Honda Civic won't actually make boost until around 6500rpm and its far from getting a roadworthy certificate.
