Type 1 AFM upgrade for Z31/R31 (Zener diode mod)

Post by Matt »

This is for upgrading early model Z31/R31 ECUs to run 0-5 volt AFMs off later model Nissans (and other vehicles such as Ford Cobra/Lightning)

This mod bypasses the OPAMP on the miniboard and is documented in the software users manual

Zener diode 5.1 volts (available Dick Smith and Altronics in Australia) will clamp AFM voltages exceeding this to prevent damage to the HD46510 AD converter chip

I've tested this with 8 volts going in and stops the voltage at 5.11 displayed in NIStune on a VLT ECU.

Remember to remove the LEGACY_AFM_OFFSET from your address file after doing this modificaiton so the volts show up properly

Just a note, failure to add the zener diode may damage the HD46510 chip if the Z32 or similar AFM outputs more than 5.1 volts

We have noticed that the AFM voltage will spike constantly when the chip is damaged because the input voltage has been exceeded

Hi Matt

sorry for stupid question, but I cannot find complete guideline for Z31 ECU upgrade to use Z32AFM in software user manual. Was it moved?

Thank you

Moved to Type 1 hardware install manual

Removed the zener diode part for these ECUs as not needed
