where to install a microphone? how to install? simply hang the near the intake manifold
better to plug in a microphone and headphones to a notebook? or amplifier Jaycar KC5152 better suited to this task?

Install microphone in long plastic tube and place near intake of engine.

You could try a notebook. I just made a dedicated unit because its portable and cheap

Matt, what do you think about connecting two microphones? Putting one near the front of the engine and one near the back.

I FINALLY got all my stuff I ordered from Jaycar (I dont know why it took so long) but Im going to be assembling it soon. There was a minimum order amount so I bought two microphones and some other crap.

I recently made my own set of these using the same headphones that you used. Actually, I had already done this several years ago using one of those personal sound amplifiers, but I had issues with alternator whine/noise feeding into the line and never got around to fixing that. So, this time, I used some shielded "CAT7" Ethernet cable. This stuff is double shielded and really great at minimizing EMI interference: http://www.amazon.com/Tera-Grand-Shield ... detailpage. I used two of the 8 wires to connect right where the harness connects to the little knock sensor sub-harness and then grounded the shielding to the head. I tested it and the alternator whine is gone and I can hear the engine perfectly now. Looking forward to testing them out.

Good stuff. The shielded cable type is important as I had similar issues with engine noise until going to a better quality (higher shielding) cable

For something more permanent you could use veroboard (instead of breadboard). I don't know about PCBs available outside Australia for this project. You just need a simple audio amplifier board (usually available in kit form)
