Uploading data from a jap-tuned ECU

Hi
I understand that it is possible to sync a stock ECU to my pc as a backup before I install a board. (Yes I know it is "pointless" since it is stock)
But..Is it possible to read data from a ECU that have allready been "chipped" in japan as long the consult port is working? Is this generally possible or are all boards that have been tuned locked from reading?

yes, its the same as doing a stock a ecu but......
you may find some japan ecu's have been cleverly blocked from reading the maps, i know this as a mates r33 gtst with unknown jap ecu couldnt be read or downloaded

Operations - Consult Download will get the whole ROM on a standard or rechipped ECU
Use sync on a Nistune board
Interesting with the R33 ... I havent seen any which blocked the ROM READ (0xC9) consult command yet

this wasnt with nistune matt this was some tuning company over here he told us he couldnt read it but i dunno what he was using to read it

if the ECU used a resocketed H8 chip then it could be likely.
however the R33 cannot buffer as much data as other ECUs so may result in errors when trying to do things like downloading with other consult software

ECU's from TopSecret tend to have the C9 command disabled

on the discussion of r33 ecus and unable to read them
my mate has one he wants to read the info off so he can sell it on as he is running a link g4 standalone ecu now
we tried to read it but nistune said something like only avaible in extended nistune or something?
one of the big chips has been removed and socketed with a removable chip, same as another one i've incountered which couldnt be read?

Its quite probable that they removed the C9 command from the consult stream. I used to do this when I chipped ECU's for a chipping company, and still do on ROM only upgrades. It was just another way to secure the programs. If there is a H8 CPU and another 'jungle' chip with an eprom on the board, it's quite probable that the eprom has been 'scrambled' and is decoded with the FPGA on the expansion board. Got photo's of what we're dealing with ??

sorry got no photos but imagine a big socket soldered straight onto the ecu main board and then a a chip pushed inside it
does really matter its the fact i like to make things work that shouldnt but i guess hks must of scrambled it or removed the function

Ah yes, its just a new reprogrammed H8 MPU. Could look at if you wanted to send it up to me, but there would be charges for time spent on 'de-coding' - could take a couple of hours or even minutes, depending what they've done.

if its a reprogrammed H8 and they wernt to the trouble of disabling both C9 commands (yes there are two compares) then wouldnt they lock the H8 also during PROM programming to prevent reads?
so how would you then decode it?
