VG30ET....running different ECU/loom

Hi.....I'm pretty sure there will be no problems in doing this?
and assuming that.....what would be the best ECU/loom combo to install (custom wiring is not a problem).
main reason is cant find a VG30ET loom and ECU for cheap enough.
surely can find a RB20DET ecu/loom pretty easily and cheap tho

This from a Z31 VG30ET? Use a R31 loom if you can get one. Pretty similar

Im not sure what model the VG30ET is out of......mate bought a Datsun that had been crashed with the engine already in it.
had a really OLD link running it, so want to ditch that.
so R31 loom? and what sorta ECU (thats common) would be best?

R31/Z31 functionally look identical. minor differences in the later Z31 with a few pins swapped
Earlier 1986 versions are the same. Except fuel temp sensor
You can drop a Z31 image into an R31 ECU also.... so R31 ECU if they are readily available there

and R31 would be a RB20ET? (single cam RB20?) Im not sure what they came out with lol
R32 looms and ECU's are extremely common over here.....so would one of those ECU's run the VG30ET ok? I cant see why not?
dont mind changing coil packs/injectors e.t.c. if need be.

your VG30ET does that have dizzy or coil pack?
Z31 VG30ET/R31 RB30E/R31 RB20E are the same ECU plugs (dizzy)
HR31 RB20DET early coil pack with 4 plugs (coil pack, harder to get not recommended)
Z32/HCR32 are coil pack but blue connector

so I have found out that the engine is a Z31 VG30ET, and has a dizzy.
so does that leave us with either a Z31 or R31 loom and ECU as our only options?

You can install a z32/r32 cas in place of the z31 cas (entire unit, not just the wheel) and go with newer style ecu.

so a R32/Z32 CAS will go in place of the Z31 VG30ET dizzy? sounds great if it would fit?
If it does, then I think we'll go with a complete R32 setup

I have the maxima/j30 cas in mine but it's the same thing. The hardest part is getting the crank and the sensor referenced back to where they should be. After that you go wasted spark, coil on plug, LS1 coils have been made to work with a bit of mods or use the msd epoxy coils like I have. 22psi with a .050 plug gap makes for a smooth running engine.

sounds great.
so have you got any tips on how to get the CAS referenced to the right spot?

The L dist drive has 8 tangs on the bottom of the shaft. I had to move the reference over one tooth for my cas. I checked it with a timing light before I started the car. With nistune telling me what the ecu was calling for of course.

the L dist drive?....I thought we were talking about swapping the Z31 VG30 dist for a R32 RB CAS?

I'm just telling you what I had to do on mine. You could very end up with a different orientation. Either way you have to get the actual timing verified with what the ecu is commanding.

So make sure the timing light is matching the timing reported by consult once you have it fitted
