safe timing to start from

good afternoon gear heads,

im trying to find safe timing to start from on
my setup so i know what normal engine noise is
when i get my knock ear/det can set up. can anyone
point me to some safe numbers? i looked at the
stock ecu ign map and they ssem to run VERY
conservative timing.

here's my set up
sr20det black top
555cc
20psi max boost level
fuel is 93 octane pump gas

Factory timing is setup for factory boost levels. Once you increase your boost levels, then the timing may require adjustment in the areas where boost has increased beyond factory.

The method usually used for setting timing is peak torque method. So you adjust the timing area based on maximum torque, as beyond this you will start entering detonation areas. However I would suggest some further reading on tuning in general since the basis of this question requires some understanding of the fundamentals of tuning before diving in

Some places like EFI Univeristy are a good place to start, and they have insturction videos too

ok sounds good man I would really rather learn
and do a street tune then pay someone to do it for
me. I figured take a look at a stock ecu timing table
and retard about a degree for every pound of boost
i put into it in the high load areas. but some of the
high load areas were at three degrees. you really cant
go much past that right? Just checked out that efi
university. great idea gonna get rollin on that pronto

is there a link or a place to start from to learn how. like a nistune ignition timing map how to for beginners. i havnt found a right up saying how to begin tuning timing yet. i know the rule of thumb is to retard timing 1 degree for each psi of boost but thats a rough start.

Not Nissan specific with regards to timing map. We normally monitor for peak torque which is a standard tuning method. Google EFI University as they have a lot of tuning info with videos to help you understand the whole process - not just changing numbers in maps

is there a way you could post a pic of one of your timing maps from a basically stock engine not one thats running e85. just so i can get an idea of what a known good one from a nissan looks like
