This may be a noobtard question. If so.. I'm sorry.
I'm into tuning my oh so VERY stock SR20 REDTOP 50F00 engine.
My idea about tuning was to do it pretty simple, tuningwise.
I dont care sooo much about fuel consumptions and specific powerschemes and sh*t
I would either buy a pre-tuned ecu on ebay for a stock turbo,afm and injectors with a higher boostlimiter
..and then next year buy another ecu for something like gr3071, z32afm, 555injectors and tomie cams.
OR I buy nistune and upload the proper adressfile that fits the setup I want both for the stock setup I wanna run this year and then later for my powertrip
What is available for a SR20 REDTOP 50F00 when I buy a type 3 board?
Someone must have contributed with something for that engine setup?
Or have I completely misunderstood the basics of nistune and do I have to have a tuningguy f**ting my engine for three days straight for the price of a brand new tomie engine?

Yes, there are base images around for that combination of hardware. But you should not just plug it in and go. You still need to get it at least checked/tweaked on the dyno. That's the whole idea of having realtime tuning.
Plugging in a tuned ECU and just using it is a recipe for disaster. You only need something like a lazy fuel pump, dirty AFM, incorrectly set FPR, wrong sparkplug heat range, dodgy tank of fuel or poor boost control to bring you unstuck.
I've seen this many times. I program my known-good-and-well-proven base map for the particular injector/AFM combination and AFR's are completely wrong once it's on the dyno. Then the diagnostics start. This is why dyno work can get expensive. But if your car is well maintained you should be fine.
Having your car dyno tuned (by a competent operator!) is the best money you can possibly spend on it.

Hi Hans,
The simplest way is to stick with a common setup (like Z32 AFM, 550cc inj and T28 or 2871 running 15 to 16psi). Naturally you'd have a FMIC, free flowing exhaust and an upgraded fuel system.
Then you can program your "pre-tuned" maps and hopefully it'll all fall into place. Get it on the dyno for a check and if AFR's are good and there's no detonation then you're done.
In reality this rarely happens. There's always something to mess up your fun. Drilled out injectors instead of the real deal, "eBay" Chinese Z32 AFM instead of genuine JECS etc. etc.
There is no collection of tuned maps. All std maps are available off the NIStune site for free in the form of an executable file. You'll find that most people will not give away tuned maps because they've put so much time and effort into them. If you spent hours sorting out a tune and hundreds of dollars on the dyno (not to mention wear and tear on your engine) would you give it away?
The other problem is that in these litigous (spelling?) times people are very quick to point fingers when their expensive engine expires. And if they've been given a tuned map then the first thing they'll do is blame the person who gave them the map!

some z32's are even sensitive on the way they are installed and give varying readings.. for evample the intake snorkel and believe it or not the pod itself.. with a non turbo setup you can be a little fluffy with the timing and fuelling but if you plan on running boost you had better have a wideband atleast..
so many people tweak standard setups and damage the ring lands on the piston however it goes unnoticed and when the time comes to run a siginificant amount of power the engine fails.. due to the damage to the rings from the previous dodgy tune.. resulting in a massive spend and 250+ KW's for a few days.. one preson I know launched outside the dyno place and next thing smoke pissing out everywhere.. but the tune was perfect on the dyno.. the engine just had issues.. and signs of previous detonation..

I very much like the fact that nistune is a bit similar to an open source software or gameconsole hacking community lot of experience online.
I intend to team up with a local tuner and start promoting nistune here in denmark if things turn out to be the shit what its pretty much seems to be. I've asked around but noone seems to install or run nistune solutions in this contry.
I also had a look at tomies site and they seeem to be selling pretuned ecu's. As far as I can think these ecu dont have a better chance of beeing correctly set up than anything you can get of ebay, right?

I think I'd still trust a Tomei ECU rather than something off eBay. But in the end they still suffer the same problems of not knowing the exact engine setup.
When these engines were newer it wouldn't be so bad. You could count on things more. But now they're getting old everything has changed, people have done dodgy mods and lots of aftermarket parts have been fitted so you can't count on anything!

And added to that unlike "EBay tuners" Tomei has run their car in JGTC. Not that it is relevant to SR20, but is says something about Tomei level of expertise.
But it is highly probable that tomei ECUs are tuned for 100 RON petrol.
Speaking of pretuned ECUs/bins AND standalones - Nistune is a step further (a huge step, i might add) in that it
- allows you to save a lot of money on ECU (which you already have)
- allows you to avoid "one size fit all" tunes, 99% of which are suboptimal for your engine
- allows you to avoid messing with emulators, programmers, EPROMs, etc
- allows you to start with a known good maps (OEMs actually spent lots of time and use some very complex and highly expensive equipment unavailable to even serious tuners and workshops while calibrating their ECUs)
- allows you to save lots of time for tuning because it provides real-time tuning capabilities and comprehensive datalogging
I cannot say that it is really opensource, but it IS developed and run by enthusiasts who are keen to support the product and share available knowledge.
