Ca18det new build. Setup help
Hi new user in the UK. I have fully rebuilt engine with forged internals and larger turbo. Because this is new build I am trying to set car up on standard injectors, boost & image. Once everything is working well as standard I will then make changes to MAF and injectors etc.
I have used standard injectors and standard MAF; all sensors are standard only difference is larger turbo, FMIC and boost controller. I have boost controller set to 10psi and disconnected the OEM solenoid. I have set timing with strobe and actual timing is matched with reported consult timing ok.
I am running the base map sent on the nistune board, 36F05 and the address file sent S13_CA18_256_E I have not made any changes just logging info and setting up engine.
During first use we ran very rich because fuel pressure was set high, this is now at 2.5bar and running better. Cleaned plugs and set timing ok car now ticks over ok but high, 1200rpm. Wideband is hooked up and running 13-14 on warm tick over 1200rpm.
Took car out for drive and could only make 5psi, car ran rich and stumbled. Played with waste gate / solenoid pipes and got 10psi, car ran better but stumbled at 3500rpm. Looked at logs and I am maxing the MAF hitting 5v at 3500rpm but only making 10psi.
My questions, how this info will help other users setup the CA18DET on a new engine build.
What is the standard tps setting? When throttle closed / WOT what should tps voltages be? I have 0.54v – 3.??v There is room for adjustment, also the idle switch does not change in consult, should this change when open / close the throttle?
Should timing value in nistune/consult display match crank timing. I.e. I have car stable 1200rpm nistune timing is stable 30. I have timing strobe set to +10deg and crank is reading 20deg so crank is actual 30deg, is this correct?
Why would I max the standard MAF only making 10psi? Is the problem related to the larger turbo and 3” intercooler piping and large FMIC, i.e. is this because flow has increased and psi is lower? Or is this because I have the MAF close to turbo and no air filter. I wanted to have the car running as standard but not sure if this is possible with larger turbo, should I just change the MAF to my Q45 one and start tuning?
Unstable idle, how do I cure this I have disconnected both electronic regulators and used screw to try and set idle, it likes 1200rpm if I try to set lower it hunts high and low. I think this may be related to some other problem that needs to be resolved first. Does 36F05 need O2 input? I have not connected narrow band output from LC1 to ECU yet would this make any changes?
I would like to get the car working well on the base map before I started messing with the tuning. Not sure if this is possible so would like to know all of my base settings are good before I move on and damage a very expensive engine build. So far things have been rich so only damage is sooty plugs and dirty oil.
Thanks for any help / advice, can’t wait to fully get to grips with nistune, it’s very nice

Turbo has better flow MAF is not measuring pressure and CA mafs are useful for nothing more then OEM setup, change it immediately, then see what hapends. Why would I max the standard MAF only making 10psi? your TPS voltage at idle is too high...
you should have arround 0.45V, more or less, and the idle will lower... after that you'll need to adjust it, or check it is correct. after that, check the timing, with the timing gun and HT lead, so it's spot on 15º BTDC.
as for fuel pressure, I hope those 2.5 bar you have are with the vacum pipe disconnected...

Thanks guys, I will be back in the garage tomorrow and will adjust the TPS sensor position and try to get .45v on closed throttle.
Can you guide me in the directon for connecting the Q45 MAF? What are the wires that need to be connected to the S13 loom?
On a side note I am looking for LARGE injectors to run E85 has anyone used http://injectordynamics.com/ or http://www.fuelinjectorclinic.com/ or can you tell me where would be best palce to buy 4x 1000cc or larger injectors without breaking the bank. injectordynamics.com do 2000cc ones nice!
Thanks, Dan.

When the throttle closed, you should see the "Idle" showing in RED,
If the Idle is not switched on (Red), the idle timing will goes up to 30, and due to the advanced timing, the idle will stay high like yours, just adjust your TPS until you see the Idle switch is On (Red), and aim at 0.45V , the idle timming will back to normal.
It is ok if O2 sensor signal not connected on 36F05, I have tried on both 36F00 and 36F05, it is the same, the ECU will show default O2 singal voltage 0.32V, and I have been running fine without O2 connected since 2006.
You don't have to connect the O2 singal now, when you change injectors and AFM, you need to unplug it anyway, when adjusting the K value, you need to disable the O2 feedback, connect it only when your tuning is fully completed.
I haven't try Injector Dynamics 1,000cc injectors but I heard that it is a very good and easy to tune injectors, it is higt resistant, may be you need to disable your stock resistor.

Ok so I know I cannot run the car with standard setup due to the turbo change and the MAF being useless. So today I did the following.
Took a short log with standard MAF.
Changed to Q45 MAF and adjusted in Nistune, auto adjust TP load scales, VQ maps differ – truncating
K constant has moved from 183 to 425
Then I set the TPS switch so this is working now. Idle goes red when throttle closed and 0.40v. Checked fuel pressure with vac hose removed and this is now 2.5bar.
Then ran the car up with the new MAF and took a short log. Before taking the log the car was running super rich so reduced K to 400, this gave 0.95 lambda on idle. The problem I have now is rich idle and leaning out when engine is revved. Did not have time to take car out for a drive so this was all done stationary.
Do I need to be concerned with any of the logged data or should I take car out for a run and see how it goes? Will be at the garage for the next couple days trying to dial this in before we make it to MOT test. Really appreciate the help and advice and would like to say I love Nistune!!

I have some questions regarding scaling and TTPmax/min. I have been reading through lots of posts here to get as much info as possible but think it may have done more harm than good!
I ran car a few times today and things are ok but it was getting very jerky when boost cut in around 10psi, I think this is called boost cut? So I have raised my TP load limit all to 255 and this cured the problem. Now my TP is flat lining at 88. Same problems as this post. Standard injectors with Q45 MAF. viewtopic.php?t=1283
I think I need to rescale my maps and increase TTP max to remove the TP 88 flat line. Reading through the post I found this info regarding TTP Max, viewtopic.php?t=977
It states that the ca18det latest ROM pack has the right address file. Next Nistune version will make the TTPMax scaling 0- 3200 rpm, and also the reversed TTPmax/min problem.
In my setup the TTP Max only goes up to 2200rpm and my TP flat line is happening around 4000rpm. (Using S13_CA18DET_128_E.adr)
I am still not 100% confident I am using the correct address file? I have posted log and the address files and hope someone (Matt?) can confirm I am running the correct files before I break a very expensive engine build.
Also how do I resolve rich idle? I am seeing 0.7AFR on idle but as soon as throttle is used this is around 1.0AFR. I tried to reduce values in the lower part of fuel map but had no effect. Do I need to play with TTP Min I would not have though this is the case because I am still using standard injectors. If I bring K down I can get idle leaner but throttle then makes me dangerously lean so I have put K back to 430 now. I will keep reading the tuning guide and try to rescale the maps any advice on this would be really appreciated. I need to make the car driveable and safe so I can get to rolling road. Thanks,

I just downloaded the latest version of Nistune (0.9.14.07) and it did not include a TTP Max that went to 3200, are you talking about a newer version than what I have for the updated ADR file?
