Differences in S14 FL/S14a JDM ECUs

Post by sifadula »

Hi all,

I have been trying to identify my ECU as I have a Nistune type 4 board being fitted to it soon and the tuner needs to know if he has the right adapter plug

Through alot of google and difference sources of info on the internet:

23710-80F00 - S14 - SR20DET - M/T - 06/96~12/98
23710-0A547 - S14 - SR20DET - M/T - 09/97~12/98

These are the two relevant ECUs that I could be running. Most commonly I believe the SR20DETs from the S14 will be running 80F00

I have transplanted this S14a SR20DET with loom and ecu (all factory) into my S14 PFL.

It runs the S15 coils and T28 ball bearing with 370cc purple injectors which leads to be the last of the S14 SR20DET engines (as older ones ran different coils and T28 bush bearing)

Does anyone know the difference between these two ECU codes?

Or is there any difference at all and a Type 4 board will fit and there is one type of adapter /consult plug for Type 4 boards?

23710-0A547 - S14 - SR20DET - M/T - 09/97~12/98
Not sure on the second part number - never seen it

23710-80Fxx (JDM), 82Fxx (EDM), 83Fxx (ADM) are all Series 2 S14A SR20DET (Type 4 adaptor A)

23710-69Fxx (JDM), 74Fxx (JDM), 75Fxx (EDM) are all Series 1 S14 SR20DET (Type 3 board)

Thanks Matt.

Can I ask you some questions as I might have a feeling I might need a Type 3 Board now.

The engine is definitely a S14 FL (Series 2) engine as identified in original post (T28BB, 380cc purple injectors and S15 coils). However this was originally transplanted into a 180sx and the ECU sits within a RB ECU Casing.

I have been told that I will have a S14 PFL ECU then if it fits within the RB ECU Casing as this uses the "long" 76 pin connector?

Through research I see only RB, S13 and S14 PFL used the 76 pin connector whilst all other S14a / S15 / 180sx Type X used 64 pin

1. Its possible to rewire the S14 PFL ECU to work on S14a S15 engine right? (my main thought is the wiring for the coils as no ignitor pack is separate here)

2. I will confirm the pins on my current ECU but do you agree if it is 76 pin - I will require a Type 3 board, and if it is a 64 pin I will require a Type 4 board?

3. Is there a size difference on the blue ECU pin plug? (i.e is the difference only in the number of pins and how they are laid out, so effectively a S14 / S15 ecu board could fit into a RB casing if required)

Thanks , sorry if any of this is confusing to follow, ECU casing being RB and I have not much to go off on part # or markings

Cheers

Sorry for the picture spam but the ECU that is plugged in is the RB Case (S14 FL ECU 23710-80F00 inside it) and the unplugged ECU is a 69F S14 PFL ECU (i.e 76 pin)

Looking at this quick comparison, my current ecu loom plug definitely won't plug into the 69F ECU.

So therefore just because it is a RB Case doesn't mean its automatically a 76 Pin? (i.e long header plug)

I think I am comfortable to say my ECU is definitely not a S14 PFL one

it seems some S14's had a S14a type ECU.

S14 old type ECU (always type 3 Nistune board ?) : 76 pin, 3 blue tabs on either side of the central bolt
S14/S14A new type ECU (always type 4 Nistune board) : 64 pin, 2 blue tabs on either side of the central bolt

One way to know for sure what board you need, is to open up the ECU and identify the motherboard .
I currently have a 75F05 S14 ECU on my desk that according to Matt's info above should be a type 3 , but it's a 64 pin and motherboard is clearly a S14a type, so it needs a type 4 ?!? :?

There is a crossover with these ECUs not mentioned above. 75F05/75F15 ECUs are the exception fitted to later model S14A ECUs with later model Type 4 connectors

I've found that Nissan will normally use the last digit of the ECU part number for software revision updated, so where the last digit is 0-4 this signifies an revision

However where the last digit is 5-9 then this means a model change. What I have found is the the part numbers 23710-75F05 and 23710-75F15 are S14A (short plug hardware with the internals taking Type 4 board). Also second last digit 0=manual trans, 1 = auto trans. In uprevisions of hardware/firmware I've seen this also changed to 6=manual trans, 7=auto trans

69F00 ECU = S14 Series 1 (long plug) which takes Type 3

Your ECUs pictured A18-L69 GG2 plugged in (I cannot see how many pin, is this the same as 76 pin ECU next to it?)
And other one A18-000 G70 (23710-69F00) = Type 3 (76 pin = long plug)

As Eric says, best to open up the first ECU and identify this to see which board it takes by looking at internals

Hi Matt,

My ECU plugged in A18-L69 GG2 (which is pictured from the opposite side to the plug) I uploaded pictures showing that the 76 pin ECU next to it is about 1cm longer on each side - which leads me to believe my current ECU is a 64 pin and only the covers have been changed (covers which are held on by 4 screws)

Unfortunately I'm overseas for work so therefore cannot count the pins and only got someone to do a quick side by side check

Are there any identifiers on the internal S14a board that I should be looking for?

Okay if its the 60 pin then it would take the Type 4 board (S14A base hardware)

Internally, look at our Type 4 hardware install manual for images (Nistune.com > Installation Documentation) - Takes Adaptor A connector

Hi Matt,

Please see my ecu board on both sides.

I believe this is a type 4 board required based on the solder points and being 64 pin
